Five reasons why Lake Havasu City is America's Hottest City
- It's a dry heat. Without monsoon circulation and clouds to provide relief from the heat, the air becomes extremely dry and heats up quickly. Winds from the west blow hot air with no moisture.
- The river can't win. The cool waters of the mighty Colorado River are simply no match against the intense desert and climate factors in the area.
- The rocks get very hot. Rocks retain heat much like concrete and asphalt in large cities, preventing temperatures from cooling down.
- It lacks irrigation. Lake Havasu City lacks irrigated crops. Towns like Parker, about 30 miles south, enjoy slightly cooler weather because of the abundance of agriculture in the area.
- It’s a desert heat island. The factors above combine to create a heat island effect, driving up temperatures at night in an area with a relatively sparse population.
“Hot for Havasu: America’s Hottest Party” celebrated the 25th anniversary of Lake Havasu City as the city with the highest recorded temperature in the United States: 128 degrees F. on June 29, 1994.
