You’ve made it through Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday. Thank goodness January is a sanctuary from all that pressure. Time to enjoy one of our famed special events.
- Attend 2018’s First Race at Havasu 95 Speedway, January 6, 2017
Attention race fans: Havasu 95 Speedway is an American Speed Association-sanctioned paved oval track that runs stock car races in classes including late models, modifieds, trucks, street stocks, legends, Bandoleros, and factory stocks.
Our favorite race is the April 21 Waterless Boat Race. Huh? Well it’s just as it sounds; race cars tow derelict boat hulls around the track. It’s hilarious. You have to see the video: https://golakehavasu.com/event/havasu-95-speedway-race-season/2018-01-06/
The track is located at 7260 S. Sara Parkway, off of Highway 95 on the south side of town. Gates open two hours prior to race time.

- 22nd Annual Buses By the Bridge, Jan. 12-14, 2018
That old hippie stand-by, the Volkswagen bus, receives another 15 minutes of fame as VW buses arrive from all over the country for a giant campout at Lake Havasu State Park.
Enjoy visiting with all vintages and types. Last year we saw VW buses decorated with peace signs, cow skulls, and winking eyes. The event includes a bouncy house for kids, hot air balloon rides, and a chili cook-off. The grand finale at this ode to the classics is a delicious pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. Admission is $2 for the entire weekend, which breaks down to approximately 67 cents per day, or about the cost of two gallons of gas back when some of those vintage vehicles first rolled off the line.
- 8th Annual Havasu Balloon Festival & Fair, Jan. 19-21, 2018
This year, the popular Havasu Balloon Festival & Fair has a new location: Lake Havasu State Park (Windsor 4), at 171 London Bridge Road. Over 75 balloons of all shapes and sizes are scheduled to appear.
The Festival includes a swap meet, beer garden, live stage bands, and vintage/classic car show. There’s also the chance to walk inside an inflated balloon on the ground, purchase tethered and untethered balloon rides, and photograph balloons glowing like a multitude of colorful Japanese lanterns at the nighttime Balloon Glow
You’ll see them all over town that weekend. The balloons love to soar over Lake Havasu City, and around Bridgewater Channel and the London Bridge; so get your cameras ready.
Our favorites are special shaped balloons, which this year include football and soccer balls, fire trucks, and a peg-legged pirate parrot, if you can believe it.
For those arriving by boat, there will be a separate gate entrance for boaters who park along the Bridgewater Channel and enter through the beach. All boat parking is free and unreserved.
Best of all, the Havasu Island Balloon Festival & Fair was born from the desire of members of the originating Lake Havasu London Bridge Lions Club and the London Bridge Rotary Club to give back to the community on a larger scale than ever imagined before. Proceeds benefit a number of charities, allowing them to continue performing great work for the community.

- Havasu Top Chef & Wine Tasting Event, Jan. 25, 2018
We can’t all live on pizza, beer, and take out. It’s often nice to expand our culinary horizons. That’s why we like to attend the annual Havasu Top Chef & Wine Tasting event, coming to the London Bridge Resort on January 25, 2018.
Cheer on your favorite local chef who will be competing to become Lake Havasu Hospitality Association’s “Top Chef.” Each contestant will be required to make their best dish with only a limited number of pantry items and a mystery protein. The “Top Chef” will be chosen by a panel of judges.
Attendees can enjoy appetizers from local restaurants, and participate in a wine and beer tasting, while Lake Havasu City’s most accomplished mixologists compete for the title of “Top Mixologist” right before your thirsty eyes.
Tickets are available at the Lake Havasu Area Chamber of Commerce, Schlotzsky’s, Shugrue’s, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn, The Nautical Beachfront Resort, and London Bridge Resort. Get tickets early as this popular event sells out quickly. Admission is $50 per person.
