SARA Mountain Park Loop Trail
Overview
This splendid loop trail, on both level and hilly terrain, encircles the mountain block at SARA Park with views of Picnic Table Mountain, the Red Rock Grotto, Lookout Point, the "Crack," Cupcake Mountain and Solitude Cove.
This brand new route was established by Steve Eskenazi in March of 2011 by utilizing sections of existing trails and adding connectors to create a unique loop hike which traverses the various environments surrounding SARA Park.

Directions to Trailhead:
Go south on Hwy 95; turn right on Acoma Blvd S and make an immediate left on Sweetwater Ave. Turn right on Powell Dr and park at the end.
Trail Route Instructions:
- Walk down the trail to the intersection of the two main washes and turn left into Chesapeake Wash. Keep to the right side of the wash along the mountains and when it splits in about a mile, take the right fork. Do not take the fork that veers sharply left.
- In about a tenth of a mile, the first of three trails leading into the foothills cuts off to the right. Go up this trail and continue along the base of the mountains. Shortly after the lookout point spur trail (to the right), the main trail splits. Keep right and continue in the same general direction and you should find yourself alongside a mound on your left as you walk up a small hill. A short distance further, the upper grotto trail branches off to your right and makes its way down into the crack wash in SARA Park while overlooking the Red Rock Grotto on the right. This entire journey in the foothills seems long but is only a mile.
- Once in the wash, you can jump on the Red Trail on the other side for a better scenery or you can continue to the right in the wash (Yellow Trail). It doesn't matter, the Blue Trail is less than a half mile away and they both get you there.
- Go up the Blue Trail at MP.8 (you have actually walked about 2.4 miles at this point) to the summit at 800 ft, high above the Crack, and then back down to a flat area around MP 1.4 at 640 ft. A little further, there is a little loop on the right. Take it.
- Leave the loop in the middle and turn right to the end of the flat section. Pause and look for a rock cairn down the valley and to your left. Your destination is a small wash less than 1/2 mile away and 140 ft down. Take the trail straight out on the ridge and then left down the steep hill over to the rock cairn. Continue looking for and following rock cairns to your right until you drop down into a small wash with lots of sitting down rocks. Time for a snack! You are now at 500 ft, lowest elevation of the loop, and have walked 3.4 miles.
- Cross the wash and take the trail up the hill toward the mountains. This is the highline trail, easily followed for the rest of the journey back along the foothills of the mountains to Mockingbird Wash and the White House at elevation 760 ft and a total distance of five miles.
