Diamond Creek Road to the Colorado River

Located off Route 66 in Peach Springs, Diamond Creek Road is an adventurous "road less traveled" to the Colorado River.

You will actually be driving down into the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River where Diamond Creek used to feed into the mighty Colorado. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy nature at its grandest!

Diamond Creek is a popular location for whitewater rafting trips through the Grand Canyon as Diamond Creek Road is the only road that offers vehicular access to the Colorado River between Lees Ferry (225 miles upriver) to Pierce Ferry (52 miles downriver). A permit is required in order to travel on Diamond Creek Road, as it is located on Hualapai Indian Tribal land.

The permit may be obtained at the Hualapai Lodge ( location ). The lodge also has an onsite gift shop selling authentic Native American crafts.

The route down Diamond Creek Road is a 25-30 mile stretch from Route 66, most of it is gravel, but passable in a conventional automobile. The trip down Diamond Creek Road takes approximately 50-60 (or more) minutes. Be prepared for stunning canyon scenery along the way, such as majestic Diamond Peak outlined against the blue sky, different colors and layers of rock, as well as the random stray cow or two. The rugged ride will culminate at the Colorado River, where you can continue to explore on foot. Public access day use hours for Diamond Creek Road are 7am-5pm.

Getting there from Lake Havasu City

Take Highway 95 north to Interstate 40 east and proceed for roughly 43 miles to Exit 53 toward State Route 66. Take Route 66 east for 47 miles to Peach Springs. Follow the signs and stop by the Hualapai Lodge to obtain your permit before you venture down Diamond Creek Road.
Flash flooding
Diamond Creek Road is a primitive, graded road that runs adjacent to, and in some cases, within the streambed of the Diamond Creek. While Diamond Creek is now dry, it is a former river bed and prone to flash flooding during periods of heavy rain. For your safety, we urge you to watch weather forecasts and check with the Hualapai Lodge prior to exploring this area as flash flooding has been known to wash portions of the road away, causing portions of the road to be closed.
