Catch More Fish in Lake Havasu This Winter
“Arizona has some of the best fishing, from the Colorado River to the White Mountains and everywhere in between,” says Andy Clark, statewide sportfish program supervisor for the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD).

“Winter months in our state make Arizona a whole new destination for anglers.”
Lake Havasu is consistently ranked as one of the top bass and redear fishing destinations in the nation. Fishing is naturally slower in the winter so for the most success, we turn to John Galbraith of BassTackleMaster for some advice. His number one tip? Follow the wolf packs.
In winter months, large and smallmouth bass tend to group in big numbers, chasing schools of baitfish. "If you're lucky enough to locate a wolf pack of fish on the lake, you'll catch more fish in one day than the entire year," John says.
He also says the best way to locate a wolf pack is to keep an eye on seagulls diving on baitfish and watch for Clark's grebe: a medium-sized white flightless bird that swims and dives in the lake.

This winter, the bass bite at Lake Havasu has been solid and steady. During the winter months, Dean Rojas, bass fishing professional and Lake Havasu City resident, prefers crankbaits for all depths including a variety of SPRO baits--from the John Crews Little John 50 to the Mike McClelland RKCrawler and the deep-diving Little John DD 70.
In the fall, tournament anglers caught several bass with the largest weighing in at 5.65 pounds. Lake Havasu is also home to some monster redear sunfish, including the world-record 5.8-pound redear that was taken from the lake in February 2014.
